Formafantasma Private Residence
In their Milan apartment, Simone Farresin and Andrea Trimarchi — founders of the studio Formafantasma — translate into a domestic environment the methodological rigor that has made their practice a benchmark in contemporary design research. The studio, operating between Milan and Rotterdam, is internationally recognized for its critical approach to material, sustainability, and production processes, with works held in the permanent collections of the MoMA, V&A, Stedelijk Museum, and the MET.
The apartment, entirely designed by the duo, reflects a functional and measured approach: selected materials, a controlled palette, and careful continuity between architectural elements and furnishings. It is not a formal exercise, but an environment calibrated according to criteria of use, maintenance, and material coherence.
The living area unfolds through essential volumes, cherrywood surfaces, and a layout that prioritizes clear proportions and authentic materials. A selection of furnishings — including lighting elements by Flos — contributes to a precise reading of the space, free from redundancy.
The kitchen, produced by Very Simple Kitchen, is made entirely of brushed stainless steel and conceived as a compact functional block, designed for durability and ease of maintenance. Here, the FFQT collection by QuadroDesign is installed as the main mixer, accompanied by a remote control dedicated to filtered water. The choice of AISI316L stainless steel aligns with the project’s logic: robust, inert materials suited to intensive use and consistent in formal language.
FFQT, developed through a direct collaboration between Formafantasma and QuadroDesign, brings to the kitchen the same principles of reduction, clarity, and precision that define the rest of the apartment. The remote control for filtered water enables a separate management of the flow, preserving the clean geometry of the operational block.
In the bathrooms, materiality determines the character of the space. Surfaces are finished with volcanic lava tiles by ExCinere, chosen for their durability and for an aesthetic free from unnecessary treatments. The FFQT collection is introduced here as well, reinforcing the material coherence of the entire project: solid stainless steel, rigorous proportions, and components reduced to their essential elements. The integration between fittings and surfaces is conceived to ensure visual continuity and long-term durability.
The Formafantasma apartment synthesizes the core of their approach: reduction of elements, precise material selection, and technical solutions designed for longevity and control. In this context, FFQT is not an ornamental addition but part of a broader logic — everyday tools engineered to perform with precision, integrate seamlessly into the system, and maintain a formal language aligned with the architecture.
